Green Hydrogen for Decentralised Energy Systems in Ghana
The GH2GH (Green Hydrogen for Decentralised Energy Systems in Sub-Saharan Africa) project is an innovative initiative that showcases the integration of green hydrogen technologies into renewable energy systems to enhance energy reliability, sustainability, and resilience. The project focuses on demonstrating practical solutions for the production, storage, and utilization of green hydrogen within decentralized energy systems, particularly for off-grid and mini-grid applications. A pilot hydrogen energy system has been established at the Don Bosco Solar and Renewable Energy Centre in Ashaiman, Ghana.
The project was funded by the German Export Initiative for Environmental Protection and implemented through a partnership between Bochum University of Applied Sciences (Hochschule Bochum), Green Power Brains, SFC Energy AG, and the Don Bosco Solar and Renewable Energy Centre. The system was commissioned on February 2025, the initiative aims to demonstrate how green hydrogen can complement battery storage and strengthen the performance of solar-powered mini-grids, providing reliable long-term energy storage for decentralized electricity systems across Sub-Saharan Africa.
System Operation
The GH2GH pilot system combines an existing solar photovoltaic mini-grid with advanced hydrogen technologies to create an integrated hybrid energy system. During periods of high solar generation, surplus electricity from the PV system powers a 20kW PEM electrolyser, which uses electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen produced is compressed and stored for future use. When solar generation and battery storage are insufficient to meet electricity demand, a fuel cell of 10kW converts the stored hydrogen back into electricity, ensuring a stable and uninterrupted power supply.
Combining battery storage with hydrogen technology, the system provides both short-term and long-term energy storage, enabling renewable energy to be stored and utilized even after extended periods of low solar production.
Components
The GH2GH hydrogen pilot plant at Don Bosco Solar consists of:
- Solar photovoltaic (PV) mini-grid
- PEM electrolyser for hydrogen production
- Hydrogen compression and storage system
- Fuel cell for electricity generation
- Battery energy storage system
- Smart energy management and monitoring system
Together, these technologies form a complete Power-to-Hydrogen-to-Power (P2H2P) system that demonstrates the future of decentralized renewable energy solutions.
Education, Research and Capacity Building
In addition to serving as a technology demonstration project, GH2GH provides an excellent platform for education, applied research, and skills development. The facility supports practical training in hydrogen production, storage technologies, fuel cell operation, system integration, safety procedures, and energy management.
The project also promotes collaboration between universities, industry partners, research institutions, and vocational education providers, contributing to the development of the skilled workforce required for Ghana’s emerging hydrogen economy.
Project Impact
The GH2GH project represents one of the first pilot initiatives in Ghana to successfully integrate green hydrogen technology with a solar-powered mini-grid. The project demonstrates how hydrogen can be used as a clean and efficient energy storage solution to improve renewable energy reliability while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on conventional fossil fuels.
As a demonstration project, GH2GH is helping to pave the way for the future adoption of hydrogen technologies in Ghana and across Sub-Saharan Africa. By showcasing the integration of solar energy, battery storage, and hydrogen technologies, the project provides a practical model for building cleaner, more resilient, and sustainable energy systems for communities, educational institutions, and industries.
