Course Overview
The Pico Solar module introduces learners to small-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) systems designed to provide basic electricity services, particularly in areas with limited or no access to the national electricity grid. Pico Solar systems are commonly used for LED lighting, mobile-phone charging, radios and other small DC appliances. The module provides learners with an understanding of how these systems generate, store and supply electrical energy. The training covers the basic principles of solar energy, PV modules, rechargeable batteries, charge controllers, LED lights, switches, cables and connectors. Learners are introduced to simple load assessment and basic system sizing to help them select appropriate components for a Pico Solar application.
A major part of the module focuses on practical skills. Learners are trained to assemble, wire, test and commission a Pico Solar system or solar lantern. They also learn how to identify common faults, carry out basic maintenance and safely handle solar panels, batteries and electrical connections.

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Explain the concept and applications of Pico Solar systems.
- Identify the main components of a Pico Solar system.
- Explain basic solar PV and battery principles.
- Calculate basic energy and load requirements.
- Select appropriate Pico Solar components.
- Assemble and wire a basic Pico Solar system.
- Install and position a small PV module correctly.
- Test and commission the system.
- Carry out basic maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Apply appropriate electrical and battery safety practices.
Applicants should meet the following requirements:
Age: 18–25 years
Educational Background: Basic knowledge or experience in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Installation, or a related electrical field.
